Meet Samuel Sweek
My name is Samuel Sweek and I am delighted to have been selected as prospective parliamentary candidate for the Labour Party – representing and standing up for Huntingdon, St Neots & St Ives.
I am a proud working-class socialist, trade unionist and activist. In May 2018, I was elected as a Councillor for Huntingdon North, the ward I grew up in and in which some of my fondest memories have taken place.
I was born at Hinchingbrooke Hospital in July 1993, went to the Hartford Infant and Junior Schools and later attended St Peter’s School. I have a deep-rooted connection to the area and it is where I am raising my own two children.
As your Member of Parliament I will address the issues caused by the last decade of Conservative government who, hand-in-hand with the Liberal Democrats from 2010-2015, but on their own since, have led our country to its absolute breaking point.
We have record numbers being driven to using food banks, children going through bins at schools looking for food and teachers using their own salaries to buy classroom essentials like stationary and books.
The Tories’ austerity agenda has brought our NHS to its knees, with hospitals under-funded, under-staffed and under-resourced.
We have government inaction on the climate crisis – a real threat to our future on this planet.
This can’t go on.
As your Member of Parliament, I will tip the scales in favour of the working class, fighting for a fairer society that works for all, properly funded schools, hospitals and a comprehensive Green New Deal to decarbonise our economy by 2030.
I will campaign for and represent every corner of our constituency, across the three towns and all the villages in between. I am committed to being your representative and working in the best interests of my constituents – not for my own career.
For too long Huntingdon, St Neots & St Ives has had an anonymous MP who has acted against the best interests of the people he is supposed to represent, from supporting the Bedroom Tax and cutting disability benefits for the most vulnerable in our society, to supporting hunting and owning shares in some of the biggest polluters in the world.
You deserve so much better – and that is what I am.
I will be the voice of our constituency in Westminster, not the voice of Westminster in our constituency.
The fight starts now.
I would like to thank the members of Huntingdon Labour Party for putting their faith in me and for the overwhelming support I have received so far. This campaign isn’t just about me, it’s about all of us coming together and creating a movement for change.
I cannot wait to get started with our campaign – I hope to see you all on the doorsteps very soon.
